Weeds, Weeds, Weeds

They're everywhere! How can you control the weeds in your lawn and garden without resorting to chemicals?

Turns out there are a few environmentally friendly ways to keep the weeds away! If you are staring from scratch it's really important to put down weed cloth.  The weed cloth will prevent weeds form coming through.  You may still end up with a few pesky weeds poking through but nothing compared to how it would be without the weed cloth.

If you already have weeds there are a few things you can do to get rid of them. Pouring boiling water on weeds a few days in a row can get rid of certain types of weeds.  Spraying a solution of 20 parts water and 1 part vinegar can help get rid of dandelions, velvetleaf, thistle and smooth pigweed. Keeping your lawn mowed and lush also keeps weeds from spreading.

If none of these appeal to you go "au natural"! The planet will thank you.

Now THIS is Recycling

Kazmok is a company that takes old conveyor belts and turns them into bags, briefcases and belts.  Each bag is completely different depending on the wear and tear of the conveyor belt, so each bag has a lot of history before it is even made.

This is the ultimate in recycling - taking something that would have ended up in a landfill somewhere and turning it into something completely different.

Frequently we look at recycling as putting our plastic and paper at the curb, but it can be so much more than that.  Take a look around your home and see if there is anything that you can recycle into something else. It can be as simple as taking a bookshelf and turning it into a nightstand.

If you've recycled a household item into something new - let us know!

The Canwich - Seriously?

Eating healthy is all about choices and substitution.

Beware, The Canwich could be coming to a grocery store shelf near you.  That's right a sandwich in a can - being marketed to "people on the go" like, construction workers, people who spend lots of time outdoors and soccer moms. YIKES!

So back to choices and substitution - there's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned peanut butter and jam sandwich, but for a healthier version of this classic, try making it with almond butter and all fruit jam and put it on whole grain bread. Almond butter is sugar-free and delicious and when it's partnered with all fruit jam, the combination is a home-run!

It's a small change but one that can make a big difference in your health!
