Can You Hear Your Ancestors In The Wind?

When I was growing up in Southern Alberta, every year the class would have the privilege of a visit and a talk  by an elder Native from a nearby reserve.

During one visit, the gentleman told the class about how our dead come to visit us in the wind and that by hanging chimes we can hear them and hopefully feel them. This was how our ancestors communicate with us...so listen carefully when the chimes were sounding.  I was probably only 10 or so, but the magic in what he was saying has stayed with me my entire life.

I have always had windchimes in the trees in my yard, but none have really been good ones...usually just bought at the local garden store.  This past Christmas, my family gave me some handmade chimes and they are so beautiful.  The sound that comes through my bedroom window at night is magical.  It is soft and melodic - not like the loud clanging of the other ones, so they don't bother the neighbours.

I am hooked on beautiful windchimes...always on the lookout for something new.  I encourage you to hang some beautiful chimes in your yard, or on your balcony and keeping the folklore in mind, enjoy the sound and listen carefully for the wisdom of your people that came before you.

Beauty Wednesday - Another Great Makeup Brush You Need!

I blogged earlier about my new foundation brush - how it made such a difference in the way my foundation was applied.

Today, I want to let you know about another great  brush....The Angled Eyeliner Brush.  This is another must have in all of our cosmetic bags!

A couple of weeks ago, I went shopping for some new eyeshadow at one of the big cosmetic retailers.  The gorgeous girl with the major purple eye makeup helped me find the right shade and then applied it for me.  She used the really dark eyeshadow in the combo as an eyeliner.  Taking a small angled eyeliner brush, she wet the brush, ran it in the eyeshadow and then applied the most gorgeous eyeliner on me.  I have always used a pencil eyeliner, but the way she did it was so nice and subtle and pretty much impossible to overdo.

I ended up buying the tiny angled brush (Quo brand, I think...under $10) and use it everyday.  I line my upper lash line with a dark brown eyeshadow, angling it up just a bit at the upper edges and it is really nice.

Another great beauty find - a must for every cosmetic bag.

What Is Celiac Disease?

You can't help but notice all of the gluten free food options available in the grocery store these days.  There are even gluten free menu choices at many restaurants.  These options have come about due to the many people that have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

Someone close to me has recently been diagnosed and I found that I really didn't know what celiac disease is or how it is treated, so this has been eye opening.  Now it seems  I am meeting people every day that have been diagnosed with this condition and having opportunities to taste really great gluten free food choices.

So, what is celiac disease?  I found this great link that gives an overview of the disease, symptoms and treatment.   This Friday, we will start a series of fantastic gluten free recipes that are good for all of us.  Stay tuned.

If you  have a tried and tested gluten free recipe, please send it to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will post it on a Recipe Friday.
